NEW YORK STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY CENTER -- LOCATION AND ACCESS

Note that NYSBC has its principal operations at 133rd St and Convent Avenue in Manhattan, described here. There is also the PRT beamline operations at Brookhaven National Laboratories (see http://www.nsls.bnl.gov/users/access/access-1.htm), not described here.

TEMPORARY CONDITION - NO ACCESS VIA 135th St GATE OR FROM ST NICHOLAS TERRACE. M18 RUNNING ON AMSTERDAM

CCNY security have closed the 135th St gate during some construction period. When the 133rd St gate is also closed, (normally 10:30 pm -6:30 am work days, and all weekends) access to the Center is limited. Affiliates should arrange with staff for special access if they are at the Center outside the time of 630A - 1030P work days.

LOCATION OF THE NYSBCs BUILDING AT 133rd St and Convent Avenue.

From above, the rectangle with the green roof is the Park Building of the Center. The street just to the left of it running top to bottom is Convent Avenue. The street running top to bottom at the extreme left is Amsterdam Avenue. This picture predates phase II and III construction

Where is this in Manhattan?

image007.gif

Where is the Center in relation to the Campus of City College of New York?

NYSBC is to the SOUTH of the main campus, below 135th St.

How do I get there?

Cab/ taxi/ hire car/ own car.

From North or South, take the best route to Amsterdam Avenue, and then turn east at 133rd St (up hill away from the river) for one block. From the East, come to Amsterdam Avenue across 125th or 145th St. Parking is under the control of CCNY, and NYSBC cannot currently offer visitors parking -- see CenterParking A significant number of cab drivers will not be able to Trash.findDFdf this location without a map. We suggest you print this for them. Be sure they have understood you when you give them the address. Be sure to emphasize ONE HUNDRED and 33 rd St. It is more preferable for you to irritate them to be sure they have understood, than for them to irritate you by taking you to (all of these have been done) 33rd St & Amsterdam, or 3rd St & Amsterdam. If you are asked, emphasize that NYSBC is located in Northern Manhattan and is not in the Bronx. You have to approach the building from the 133rd St / Convent Avenue entrance to the CCNY south campus. There is no ready approach from the easterly direction.

Parking is a problem.

Bicycle.

The healthiest and most civilized route involves the Hudson River bike path, which runs continuously almost the entire length of Manhattan. From the south, ride to 125th St. Exit and ride along the perimeter road to 133rd St. Same idea from the North. Then ride UP 133rd St across to the Center (its about a 90 ft. vertical ascent but only 3 blocks). There is also a bike path along the East River starting at the southern end of the Rockefeller campus (63rd Street). Exit at 120th St and ride west along 119th Street to St. Nicholas Ave. Ride north to 126th St, turn left, then right on Convent Ave and up to 133rd St.

Bus. http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/bus/

There is a bus directly on Convent Avenue. Its the #M18. But it only runs from 110th and 5th Ave, to 168th St and Broadway; and it is infrequent. Until CUNY construction is complete, the bus is running locally on Amsterdam, not Convent.

Most generally useful are buses on Amsterdam Avenue. These are the M11, and M101 From the South, the M11 runs up Amsterdam from Greenwich Village to 133rd St. The M101 runs from 125th and 2nd Ave to 220th and Broadway. The M101 passes the Metro North station at 125th St and Park Ave and passes all the subway stations on 125th St.

Subway. http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/subway/

Since one of the attractive features of the site for the purposes of low interference was its distance from the subway lines, then regrettably there is an unattractive feature also. Its not that easy to use the subways.
  • The 1 line comes to 137th St and Broadway, and its then a good walk uphill on 137th St to Amsterdam, south to 133rd St and then one block east to the 133rd St and Convent Avenue entrance.
  • The A/B/D lines stop at 145th St and Edecombe Ave. It s a very healthy walk uphill on 145 St. to Convent Avenue, and a pleasant stroll through the North End of CCNY south to the Center, but it will take you at least 20 minutes. See the CCNY service note below.
  • The A/B/D lines also stop at 125th. There is an exit at the north end around 127th St., and it is a practical route to walk west to Morningside Avenue, and then North. Morningside then becomes Convent Ave. It's about a 12 min walk. See the CCNY service note below.
  • CCNY Service . Subject to the disposition of the CCNY drivers, you can use the van/ bus services of CCNY described at http://www1.ccny.cuny.edu/current/subway.cfm . The stops for NYSBC are either 133rd St-Parking Lot (van) or 135th-Convent (bus). Note that this service is nominally for CUNY personnel, and is not under NYSBC's auspices.

From JFK Airport

The fastest public transport way is to use the JFK Air Train to Jamaica Station. At Jamaica Station, take the E subway to either 7th Ave/53rd St and change to the D train north or continue to New York Penn Station, and change to the A train northbound. This is fast and inexpensive, but there are multiple stairs, so if you have lots of heavy luggage, either go the gym frequently before your trip, or take a cab.

From EWR (Newark Liberty) Airport

A fast way, and significantly cheaper than a cab, is use the EWR Air Train to the airport station, a NJTRANSIT train to Penn Station, New York (confusingly also stops at Penn Station, Newark), and change to the A train northbound. Note -- Amtrak trains are more expensive, and not faster. On a return trip to EWR, pay close attention to the outbound schedule and whether the train stops at the airport.

From La Guardia Airport

There is a surprisingly useful (if slow) bus that comes to the corner of Amsterdam and 125th St. Its the M60. Again, if you have luggage, a taxi will probably be worthwhile.

Large/ long / heavy vehicles

For heavy deliveries, call ahead to 212 939 0660 x9-400. Note that the gate to the parking lot and construction site at 133rd St and Convent is relatively narrow, and does not readily permit tight turns off Convent Avenue. It is best to approach this gate directly to the East on 133rd S from Amsterdam Avenue. The loading dock area at 130th St and Convent is NOT NORMALLY AVAILABLE, and is limited to small trucks. YOU MUST PHONE AHEAD to 212 939 0660 x9-400 for any non standard delivery or use of the loading dock.

Less desirable routes.

CCNY advises us that St. Nicholas Terrace and St. Nicholas Park are to be avoided especially at night.

How do I get out of NYSBC?

Public transportation -- see the notes above

Car Service

There is, to the shame of the NYC Taxi and Limo Commission, virtually no yellow cab service above 125 th St., so you should phone from NYSBC for car service in advance if you wish to use it. The current list is at ... NeighborHood#Car_Services

ACCESS TO LOT VIA THE 131 St watch gate (near the loading dock)

  1. Period: Effective immediately
  2. Effected: All all-hours affiliates, All staff
  3. Location: Park Building access
  4. Action: The watch gate can be used by all-hours affiliates and staff. Ingress will be controlled by the guard. Egress can be obtained by use of ID card. There is an intercom box with buzzer button outside the gate. There is a card reader inside the gate.
  5. Result: You can get into the south side of the parking lot via the watch gate. Outside 06:30-22:30 workdays, ONLY all-hours personnel will be permitted ingress. During working hours, when the parking gate is open, as a convenience, the guards are instructed to permit ingress to all they expect to be appropriate, but the guard has other duties and may not immediately respond. BECAUSE OF LIMITED CCNY SECURITY AT NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS, USE OF THE WATCHGATE IS THE ONLY SUGGESTED METHOD OF ACCESS TO NYSBC.

WARNING -- YOU NEED TO STEP OVER THE BOTTOM OF THE GATE, AND OVER THE SILL AT THE TOP OF THE SHORT STAIRWELL
