Research Technician
A
Research Technician position is available immediately in the Laboratory
of Cell Biophysics at NYSBC. Our project involves developing
methodology for a high-throughput screen to identify conditions for
crystallizing membrane proteins for analysis by cryoelectron
microscopy. This project is part of the NIH Protein Structure
Initiative and piggy-backs off of the robotic cloning and expression
activities at the New York Consortium on Membrane Protein Structure
(NYCOMPS), which is also housed at NYSBC. The position will require
skills in biochemistry and in electron microscopy. Although specific
experience is preferred, general experience protein chemistry or
biophysics will suffice. Send c.v. and names of three references to
David Stokes at stokes@nysbc.org. Not currently seeking ...

future vacancies for postdoctoral associates to work in the Laboratory
of Cell Biophysics at the Center, please submit a biographical sketch,
a general statement of interest, and the names of three or more

The
Laboratory of Cell Biophysics is studying in the structural basis for
cellular adhesion, which is mediated by two types of intercellular
junctions: desmosomes and adherens junctions. Although the molecular
constituents have been identified and some of their atomic structures
identified by x-ray crystallography, their organization in an intact
junction is largely unknown. We are employing the technique of electron
tomography to study the structure of junctions in situ. Our first
application has been on desmosomes, for which we have revealed the
packing of cadherin molecules within the intercellular space (see He et
al. Science 302:109 2003). We are currently applying these methods to
frozen-hydrated preparations in order to evaluate the structure of
these macromolecular complexes in a near-native state.

The
New York Structural Biology Center (NYSBC) is a state-of-the-art
research center being developed cooperatively by nine outstanding
research centers. The Center will house the largest and most advanced
cluster of high-field research magnets (NMRs) in the Americas in its
first phase.
The momentum
created by the New York Structural Biology Center has been fueled by an
exceptional core group of scientists from the participating
institutions who have taken an active role in the Center's development
since its inception. The group has been expanded to include other
scientists from throughout the area to develop plans for collaborative
research projects and future expansion of the facility.
